Today I’m puzzled by the binomial: Acropyga pallida— cryptic ants, a genus famous for how the queens carry a live mealybug in their mandibles on mating flights. Not as food, but as founding livestock that will feed on the roots of plants who, in turn, the ants tend, protect and disperse in exchange for honeydew. These ants are almost never seen above ground.
“pallida” refers to their golden color— and “acro” can mean “point” or “tip”
“pyga” could mean “button” ?What could it mean?
