Steam is cracking down on porn games, to keep Payment Processors happy.

Why shouldn't the payment processors get a say in the payments they process? Illegal or not, why should they be forced to process payments that facilitate things against their beliefs? Steam could pursue other payment processing possibilities instead of acquiescing to their demands.

While the effect of not having as much random porn on steam is kinda nice, the underlying reasons for this are fucking horrifying because it's further proof that some giant american companies (visa, paypal, mastercard) are the global morality police. And it's just random porn subgenres getting removed anyway so it kinda does nothing about the flood of those anyway.

There is a lot of talk dancing around the issue here. This isn't an American thing or a puritan thing. This is purely a capitalism thing. They have been doing this for years. Do you think lolicon got forced off of every major platform for moral reasons? It breaks laws in various counties that the web hosts and payment processors operate in. Wincest porn, CNC porn, zoo stuff, NSFL stuff. It's all illegal somewhere. These companies are chasing profits. Those niche topics mentioned above lock them out of expanding into some places. Like China. They don't give a fuck about the ethics of the content. They care that they're loosing money by not being able to conduct business in those markets. You'll loose your little family harem video game. They don't care. They're making billions processing the main narket. It's capitalism and the global economy that's making your platforms more conservative.

Well I find it a bit ironic to invoke the "free market" while simultaneously asserting they should be free to choose who they go to market with. Isn't the point of the "free market" that if Visa or Mastercard won't facilitate the needs of the market, someone else will?Payment processors should be following the most free speech laws there are, because they have de facto monopolies. If they do have a choice though, if they don’t want to support porn, then they could choose not to be a payment processor. Ideally they should be nationalised, or perhaps internationalised.

I don't care about these games and not even about steam, but a payment provider having any power over what content a service offers is really bad. It's like your supermarket checking if you eat your food they sold you with cutlery.I think a better example would be net neutrality. The whole purpose of the payment provider is to move money from Person A to Person B. Just like how ISP is meant to get you from Website A to Website B. It would be like your ISP going "Woah there buckeroo. You can't go to Duck, Duck Go to search. We only let you go to Google."

It’s kind of messy because I think there is a subset of the fandom where it isn’t necessarily sexualized. Like, Khajit and Argonians from Elder Scrolls are pretty much furries but they’re not explicitly sexual. Feel like I’m getting over my skis in terms of my understanding of that fandom since I’m not in that world. No idea how if at all those cons keep the kid safe stuff separate from the sex shit, if at all.

Yes, furry conventions that allow children do not allow children into 18+ spaces. At the very least there's always staff checking attendee badges which tend to say right on them if the attendee is an adult or not.Pretty much what I expected, thanks for confirming
