Tbh, in German something very similar happened. "Querdenker" ("outside-of-the-box-thinker") was not a bad term. It just denoted someone who would be maybe a little unconventional and quirky, but in a positive way. Until Covid happened and the virus denier faction started calling themselves "Querdenker". Now this term means "conspiracy theorist nut".
