The Solar System is a cosmic shooting gallery, and it's just a matter of time until a spacecraft decides to slam into the Earth. A team of scientists is proposing that space agencies develop a rapid-response flyby reconnaissance mission to reach a potentially hazardous asteroid within 2.5 years of detection. They suggest that a mission should be able to reach > 90% of the potential threat population of asteroids, imaging their surface down to a 5 m/pixel resolution.
