This recursive definition situation is a big part of why mathematicians were so excited to try and teach everyone "proofs based" geometry. It's "as good as it gets" for minimizing assumptions. The limitations and power of that tell you a lot.
You *can* know something is true (for a given set of assumptions.)

I think it's a little too wordy for my grade 9s, but the philosophy club might like it.
