Image description doesn't mention that the text on the image says:

      "Ceci n'est pas une pipe?"
and the one holding the gun says: "N’a jamais été"

      "This is not a pipe?"
      "It never was."

@futurebird @best_of_mltshp According to my high school French, the first guy is saying/asking:

        "This is not a pipe?"

The other day I was having this great conversation about "what comes after postmodernism?"

If modernism is sincere, optimistic, deterministic and views the world something that can be explained and controlled.

Postmodernism is sarcastic, subjective and says explaining reality is absurd.

We could call the current shift as one "back to a modernist stance" but I think that misses something. It misses how extremist positions taken on initially "as a joke" can become very real.

I am totally overthinking this one but this meme kind of captures what "after postmodernism" feels like to me.

We can't even be sincere about questioning the importance of context... and in the end what matters most is who holds the gun.

OK this got a little grim, didn't it?

            Fun meme!

It almost certain you'd know better than me. I don't even have "high school French" to lean on.

@futurebird @best_of_mltshp ¿Maybe Neo-Modernism? Like neoclassical? Wanting these things from Modernism, but still a bit of an imitation or romanticizing of it?

Something like that. This relates to my gripe about powerful people not wearing fancy outfits anymore. They want all the respect and awe that was given to a Pharaoh, but they won't put on the silly hat.

The idea that costumes don't really do anything, that, at some level, they don't really matter is a postmodern one. But, it's supposed to come with a destruction of the hierarchies implied by those costumes.

We now see people who want the rigid hierarchies but they don't want to believe in them, not really. They want to be like the "cool boss" who doesn't wear a suit, but you best not forget they are the boss.

And this feels like such a bad deal for most of us to me. At least if a king must wear a crown it can weigh on him and be heavy.
