    Saying “you’re not an artist” to someone who uses AI is starting to feel like saying “you’re not a woman” to a trans woman. The irrational fear and hatred behind it feels similar.

      @shig

      Is an author who uses a ghostwriter a writer?

        @Arthur Copeland Do you hate such authors enough to go out of your way to inform every one you encounter that they are not writers?

          @shig

          If I met one and they claimed to be a writer, I would certainly inform them that they are, in the case of the work in question, not in fact a writer.

          And “hate” doesn’t enter into it; the meaning of words does.

          Also, you didn’t answer my question. Do you consider them writers?

            @shig

            Reading your original comment again: To be clear, I also would feel NO need to tell them they aren’t an artist if they are not actually claiming to be an artist.

            One baseball guy I follow posts tons of AI images, usually making fun of a terrible baseball teams or players. I’ve never heard him claim to be an artist and never felt the need to tell him he isn’t.

            It’s just a goof and that’s fine, if occasionally tiresome. The Colorado Rockies are terrible, we get it.

              @Arthur Copeland There are plenty of people who do the same, post AI-generated images without claiming to be artists. Their comments are full of remarks like “You’re not an artist,” and when they point out that they never claimed to be, they get things like “No, but you think you are, and that’s bad enough.” And so forth. That’s the kind of hate I’m talking about, kneejerk, irrational, and unwavering. It’s ugly to see, whatever you may think of its object.

                @shig

                Having a kneejerk disdain for AI seems perfectly reasonable to me. It’s being absolutely shoved down everyone’s throats. Tech companies are desperate to make it ubiquitous. It’s trained on plagiarized work. It’s on its way to making all photos and videos suspect, and everything “not real” including things that are real. Oh, and stock bubble.

                Distrust of AI and the people pushing it is absolutely rational at this point. Hope my tone is acceptable to you.
