A lesser known Mastodon pro tip:

Want to mute a conversation, but the mute conversation button isn't appearing on the post?

The only way you can mute a conversation is on a post you have made in the conversation.

But the secret part - Say you want to mute it without actually participating in the conversation:

Reply to a post, set the visibility to "Private Mention", remove everyone's username from the post. Post it.

Then you can click "mute conversation" on THAT post, and it silently mutes you from the conversation.

  • This is an insightful but deeply upsetting article about why everyone in the US feels poor, and why the current political situation emerges as a direct result.

JFC, this section has me infuriated every time I reread it.

But there was one number I had somehow never interrogated. One number that I simply accepted, the way a child accepts gravity.

    The poverty line.

I don’t know why. It seemed apolitical, an actuarial fact calculated by serious people in government offices. A line someone else drew decades ago that we use to define who is “poor,” who is “middle class,” and who deserves help. It was infrastructure—invisible, unquestioned, foundational.

This week, while trying to understand why the American middle class feels poorer each year despite healthy GDP growth and low unemployment, I came across a sentence buried in a research paper:

“The U.S. poverty line is calculated as three times the cost of a minimum food diet in 1963, adjusted for inflation.”

It wouldn't have to replace it. I know people with 2 sinks - it can be convenient to have a cooking sink and a cleaning sink.

    I agree.

Donald Trump is NOT a stupid man.

    Really, he's not.

Okay sure, NOW he is struggling with dementia, but he's been playing fast and loose with numbers his whole career. It's a regular trait of con artists. It's like an anti-dog whistle to keep the attention of your marks and make them feel isolated from everyone else. To intentionally confuse use numbers to communicate facts with numbers to communicate vibes. For people like us who use numbers to communicate facts, we can't help ourselves but to go for the "Well Actually" when someone says "I'm going to lower prices 200%!" But for the people he's actually talking to, they understand what he's saying - "I'm going to lower prices a whole bunch".
