I buy a lot of cheap "DIY Electronics" Kits on Aliexpress put them together, the more confusing the more fun it is. But I write up better instructions and observations so if students want to build the same kit they can.
Some kits I do not tell anyone about because they are terrible. But really? Most of them are great. If you don't mind reading a datasheet or doing some detective work.
But I think blogging about "Kit Adventures" might be interesting.
It's amazing the fun you can have.

@futurebird
I followed kit adventures for, you know, kittens, like Pica, and now I'm confused?Is this goiing to be taken over by ants again?

@futurebird Have you bought anything from Aliexpress since they killed de-minimus? I've heard some rather un-fun stories and have been holding off buying from them.

@futurebird Small value packages imported from China are no longer allowed thru customs with no charge as they were prior to May 2025, so anything you buy from Aliexpress is likely to have a tariff due. On top of that Aliexpress is now not using USPS to deliver packages in many areas and instead is relying on a sketchy gig-worker outfit called Uniuni that is super unreliable.

Ah yes. I have and things are not as dirt cheap as they once were. But the prices were so low that even with them going up like 50 percent it's not that bad.
$4 vs. $6 is the difference.

It's not as cheap as those kits but this one proved to be a lot of fun for my niece.
She is 14 and hopefully will stay a nerd.I lent tools and test equipment but she built and solved it herself.
Electronic Education DIY Kit “The broken code lock” (Troubleshooting Project)
A DIY soldering kit with “integrated” design flaws. Understand the working principle, find the mistakes on the PCB and in the schematics, and make it work.

@futurebird have you seen the boardgame "City of Six Moons"? the instruction manual is in an alien language and the game is figuring out the rules of the game. https://hollandspiele.com/products/city-of-six-moons

@futurebird do you have thoughts you'd care to share about clones of the Radio Shack "N-in-1 Electronics Kit"? (They were basically a breadboard with components you connected by pinching wires into springs.) It looks like "snap circuits" are the thing to get now, but those seem less appealing.
I started looking around, and it looks like Elenco did at some point sell a 130-in-1 electronics kit (https://www.robotshop.com/products/130-in-1-electronics-playground?qd=ee8c0cc016950391e32ba9fde57f84ab). But surely there must be other kits like this.

I had one of these that was my brothers and everything was missing so I couldn't make it do anything. I think the sense of mystery about how it was meant to work is something I'm still trying to work through to this day.

i had two of them, the 60-in-One and 100-in-One. there was a project book that came with each one which would give you numbered wiring sequences, a schematic, and a wiring diagram for each circuit in the book. the number on the kit refers to the number of projects in the book, many of which are basic knowledge for building larger circuits such as op-amps, flip-flops, sensors, signals, digital logic if the kit included an IC package, serial and parallel, etc, as well as fun stuff like a crystal radio.
