The tech sector is ablaze with hype. New jargon is flying everywhere. But there are ominous signs. Even those who don't understand the technology are starting to question the stock market. Could it be a bubble?

The year is 1996. (The big crash wouldn't come until 2000.)

Then-Federal Reserve Board chairman, Alan Greenspan gives a speech where he asks "... how do we know when irrational exuberance has unduly escalated asset values?"

The phase "irrational exuberance" went viral.

@futurebird Since then "irrational exuberance" has become the goal of the techbros.

They honed in on that, and tried to push that with blockchain (twice) and now LLMs.

The original was also making fun of hype. But in this case of the inspirational speaker boy band variety.

Their original video is simply amazing.

"Yatta" means something like "yay I did it!"

But what did you do? Looks like you lost your shirt and pants to conmen. Now all you have are the green leaves.

It's such a good parody of so many things. Cults, pyramid schemes, bitcoins scams... all of that.

The simplicity of the visual of having NOTHING but "Green Leaves" but being so full of hype? Cuts to the heart of the issue in the universal language.

          It's the emperor's new clothes.

The moment is right for a remake of this song.

@futurebird right after that speech, the university I would transfer to in autumn held a tech jobs fair for CS undergrads. They had crazy deadlines for registering for fall classes, so I was already registered and got invited. The jobs fair featured a speech by some microsoft dweeb, who had the gall to quote Greenspan and use it as the centerpiece of an argument for why we should all get jobs right now with stable, long-lived companies that would for sure weather any upcoming economic issues.

@futurebird I took an economics summer course in 1998, for high school. We did a mock stock market investment for the course where we each had a fake 10k investment to buy stocks with.

I put mine into yahoo and excite.

At the end of the three week class I had earned over 100k, more than anyone else in the class.

What a wild time that was.

                    Hi Ed,

I think you will know the song in this thread, but *also* I think it would make you smile and you should put a cover of it in your podcast.

                    @Rob_T_Firefly has a good cover ...
