An old phone with a cracked screen is the new “new iPhone” the only way to one up some with this is to have either an eink screen OR pull out a blackberry or flip phone that somehow still does modern apps in some janky way.
-
yeah, I managed to break my screen again.
I went into the little Apple Store and tried holding the newest iPhone. It’s so top heavy. I doubt it would last a week so I may end up getting the screen repaired again. That is if bits of glass start flaking off of it.
@futurebird Which model iPhone were you trying out and didn't buy?
-
@OneInterestingFact @babelcarp @futurebird Yeah, this trend started in vehicles about 2004 or so and it has driven me crazy since. It's becoming a serious problem too. Those giant vehicles literally make it impossible for smaller vehicles to have protections against them. Plus they block more view (you've probably seen the images that show the angle of view of most American pickups/SUVs now and how whole entire children can be standing there and just simply not seen within that range...)
All I can figure is it comes from "supersizing" in general where people are led to believe that larger is always automatically better and usually the maker and/or seller gets a higher profit margin by getting people to think this way.
@nazokiyoubinbou @OneInterestingFact @babelcarp
"Cars" which are now all "light trucks" whatever that means are so ugly, joyless, and gross.
At least the big boats of the 50s had exuberant colors like candy and hoods you could sit on ... and tops that went down. They were social cars. Big but ... not like a tank.
Everything is gray, bloated, aggressive but somehow also made of plastic. So it's lacks even the charm of a jeep or tank.

@paulc The 17 I think?
The "pro" since I do want all the cameras but the small one since I hate how big all of them are.It's just a little bigger than my 15 pro (also the small one)
I really loved the iphone SE it was the perfect size although the camera was just "fine" I had to use lenses with it.
I no longer need to have a pocket full of lenses just to live.
-
@babelcarp @futurebird Thing is, on the Android side I see it too and OEMs there have a LOT more freedom. The fact that so few are at all reasonably sized and almost all are internally junk says that the market itself really is — overall — just buying large phones.
And I absolutely abhor that this is true.
My best phone ever at its time was the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. Very premium hardware inside for its time. A good fast CPU, enough RAM, etc etc. I later got a Z5 Compact which was almost as good with better hardware, but not as durable and slightly worse side grips.
These things fit IN my hand, not AROUND my hand as is the popular trend. And they were really mostly intended for the Japanese market. Sad thing is, SONY seems to have phased out doing compact models.

@nazokiyoubinbou @babelcarp @futurebird I have been a dedicated Sony compact user for years, because my hands are small and they are the only ones I don't drop. They don't make compacts any more - the newer ones are just a *tiny* bit skinnier than any other androids. I found an old one of mine and I could touch my thumb and middle finger round it. I'm now in mourning, as I hold this phone (still a Sony, but no longer very compact) in two hands to type.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou @OneInterestingFact @babelcarp the light truck thing is to get around CAFE emissions standards. It's all about profit - car marketing is very good and not based at all in reality.

@futurebird I also have the 15 Pro. I don’t like anything larger, I would have to replace my pants because a larger phone wouldn't fit into my phone pockets. I didn’t realize that the 17 had a weight difference. I wonder if that is the result from changes to make it run cooler.
Do you think there is any validity of my theory on why some phones get dropped? Bad pants pockets that don't hold the phone well. Which puts women at a disadvantage.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou @OneInterestingFact @babelcarp What I’ve noticed is car colors have been militarized. I used to build models of planes, tanks, and ships when I was younger and cars are using olive drab, battleship grey, Air Force blue, dessert tan. It’s a further glorification of the military-industrial complex by Americans.
Cars should be the same color as electric guitars, candy apple red, that creamy yellow, aquamarine, etc.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou @OneInterestingFact @babelcarp it's basically ended up in an arms race: everyone is scared of being in the smallest car on the road, so they all get bigger and bigger. But they're not actually objectively safer to be in (and certainly not to be near). https://www.forbes.com/sites/lauriewinkless/2025/05/07/suvs-make-traffic-worse-and-are-more-dangerous-than-cars/

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou @OneInterestingFact @babelcarp When my younger kid was in preschool last year, I'd go to pickup or drop-off and have the only colorful car in a lot full of white/silver minivans, pickups, and SUVs. It was unsettling!

One of the reasons I just can’t bring myself to get that new iPhone? Well I would be embarrassed to carry it around. It sticks out a little bit. It’s a little bigger and has that … unseemly inappropriate bulge.
It might’ve been wise for them to have just released some new colorways the similar form factor to the older phones.
I can’t tell why it needs to bulge out like that. It’s not like they’ve improved the macro camera.
is this something that appeals to men is that why I don’t get it?
@futurebird The iPhone Air is a refreshing form factor.

@futurebird The iPhone Air is a refreshing form factor.
I phone air has no macro lens. So it can't photograph ants as well. I'd need to carry one of those clip ons again.
It's a nice size.
