This photo is giving me vertigo.
In my childhood home I had that exact rug, we also had that exact desk, those bears on the wall same photo and frame, and the same computer (but the keyboard is different.)
Yet I don't recognize the woman or the gun.
The rug was bought before I was born. I guess they sold a lot of them in the US.
I should send this to my brother and say "remember when she came over?" He'll think he has repressed memories.

I had that rug, with that desk, and even the phone on the bookcase is the same, in the same position!
... We only ever had the one computer, though.

His friends from Harvard always looked like her. I still have the creeping sense that I know her. But knowing that other people recognize the rug is comforting.
Since it was "old" even when I was a child I thought it was more unique.
Set up so many "battles" with toys on the shapes of that rug, pretending the "elephant feet" mandalas were islands...

It is so odd how things that you would not think of as "dated" become these signifiers of a very specific time and place.
I wonder which of the objects around me will have that quality in 30 years?

Thank you for saying so. My childhood has been shattered a little by finding out that this rug was just a mass produced common item. But, it makes the photo much less eerie and I'm no longer concerned some "business woman" intern broke into my house as a kid and I don't remember it happening.

@futurebird @jessetmccann @patrickworld My wife and I stuck our heads into an estate sale, and as usual I checked the garage for tools and sporting goods, and was startled and depressed to realize that almost everything there was the same model I have in my garage.
I have reached "your shit is so old it will either be considered junk or, worse, be sought by antiques collectors at your estate sale" age.

@jericevans @futurebird @patrickworld umm… there's one in my living room, and it's not that old, actually. (Pay no attention to the small heaps of Christmas wrapping paper.)

Same general idea, but not exactly the same pattern like the one in that photo. So, it's also a general style.
