Astronomers working with the Zwicky Transient Facility have released a new catalogue of 3,628 Type Ia supernovae. This class of exploding star is valuable because they explode at a fixed brightness, allowing astronomers to calculate their distance and measure the expansion of the Universe, the influence of dark energy, and other cosmological data. The Facility is finding nearly four new Type Ia supernovae every night, doubling the known number in two and a half years.
