Io is the most volcanically active place in the Solar System, covered by hundreds of hotspots. This outgassing of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) is released into space and becomes a tenuous atmosphere around the moon, but escapes into orbit around Jupiter, gets ionized, and forms a plasma torus around Jupiter. According to a new paper, Io is losing about a ton a second from its atmosphere to supply this torus, and not directly from volcanic eruptions.
