What in the heck is a "tactical sharpie" it seems like it's just a ... shank? Like for being in prison?

But what are the circumstances where a person could have a sharpie but not a pocketknife?

This is the new EDC trend. Making plastic shanks out of markers.

You can have a knife if it's that bad I don't get it.

Is everyone in prison? What is going on?

You see, the idea of having a pocket knife is you can use it for other things and sort of think it's also a cool "weapon" that you'll never use. I don't get this "tactical sharpie" trend because it's not a sharpie anymore. You can't mark things with it ... it's just a plastic shank. And I tend to think being in any position where you'd want a "shank" is not a cool or fun time.

But I think these things are just taking up space in people's bags being useless.

You could just have an actual knife. Are the zombies putting us through metal detectors now?

@futurebird@sauropods.win Heck, a pocketknife is a utilitarian item in theory, but in practice I'd be better off getting a low profile box cutter. I've never needed to cut anything with mine aside from cardboard boxes, tape, threads, that kind of thing.

@futurebird Is it just me, or do EDC peeps kinda give prepper vibes?

Like I really wonder how often they actually get to use their EDC knife, and i also wonder if any of those times *don’t* involve opening a package they got.

@maddiefuzz @futurebird I think it largely depends on which EDC community, I've stumbled across a sort of dumb-phone EDC trend on YouTube where they show what they carry in lieu of a smart phone.
Which is like, the best because it's often fountain pen + notebook + the dumb phone + iPod or walkman. Sometimes a game boy or Nintendo DS.

@futurebird well, "everyone in prison" is kind of the end goal of fascism; everyone is either prisoner, prison guard, prison maintenance, prison managment, or prison profiteer.

@futurebird and if it's plugged in it's a sharp pointy thing that can give a tickle, making it even more tack tickle.

Depends on what you end up doing, I guess.

I have routinely carried small scissors and a box cutter in my backpack (except for events like protests where box cutters might be perceived as a weapon, in which case I take that out), and it turns out the scissors see much more use. Unless I'm stripping down cardboard boxes for recycling, and time is more important than fingers (which should never be so), box cutters aren't that useful.

30 percent of the reason people think I'm "good at fixing things" is down to the fact that I have a multi-tool in my bag and can always cut, unscrew or pry open whatever needs that tool.

It's not that hard, but it kind of makes you seem like a wizard to some people.

@futurebird @neia I wish I was actually any good at fixing things. And I wish I could afford a decent multi-tool. I used to have one, but *sigh*. Time ruins everything.
