Why is Housing Works thrift shop asking me to “show photo ID.. to enter the store?” I was not aware they were part of the got damn british internet all of a sudden.

“you need a photo ID to buy anything”
    “I can’t pay cash?”
*blank stare* “need to see photo ID”

Meanwhile other people are just walking in and out. So, naturally I left. Will not be back. Are people just showing their IDs for any little thing now?

@futurebird The hell?! That's entirely bizarre!

Would you be interested to share which location did this?

@futurebird@sauropods.win wtf! i wonder if they're trying to crack down on people buying all the most valuable items and reselling them online. but i'd think there would be better ways to do this

Maybe it’s the guy’s first day and he didn’t understand what he’s doing as retail security. It was odd.

@futurebird The only places I've ever been asked for an ID (up in MA) were places that are required to verify/collect by law, so my "something's funky" sense is going off, especially if you were the only one asked to show it... (funky on the part of the merchant, not you)

(While it's not illegal here for merchants to ask to see ID for purchases that aren't age restricted, I'm pretty sure 'requiring' one at a place that didn't have a reasonable justification would be potentially illegal discrimination up here, depending on how it was being done...)

@futurebird Maybe he suspected you were a non-citizen? Because that's what that sounds like.

Were they in a store uniform?

I've seen people ask for ID at businesses they have nothing to do with just as a prank

The guy had on a store polo shirt and was behind a little lectern near the door as "security"

@futurebird Sounds like a new security person's power trip / interest in you for the wrong reasons.

That's the vibe I got. But this is just a vibe. It was confusing. I've never had anyone ask me for a photo ID just to look around a shop.

And frankly I don't think people should have to even feel the need to always have an ID on them.

It's absurd to expect that. This is not the Pentagon campus. I'm shopping! Leave me alone!

(this is one of the reasons driving culture is insidious. It makes people forget that, no, you do not need to carry a photo ID with you to just... live.)

@futurebird it is a weird vibe and definitely not one that makes sense or should be entertained. Bored people in faux positions of power are the ones to watch though. He could maybe justify it as shop lifting proactivity but really it is probably the worst kind of profiling and he's just getting practice for when he gets to wear his big boy pants for Ice, Sluggards everywhere.

Admittedly I'm a little prickly about the whole "show your ID thing" ... the other day I was buying a vape* from 7/11 in the same neighborhood. I've never bought one before and was not surprised to be asked for proof of age. I showed my passport. They refused to accept it. Computer system can't scan a passport. It only scans driver's licenses and "state IDs" (state IDs only exist in the US because of the janky way we rely on Driver's licenses.)

                              *tacky bad, blame my uncle

I was offended by the "driver-centric" computer system and ended up at a bodega that didn't ask for any ID at all.

I'm about two more experiences from being one of those "cash only" people at this point. LAMO

I was offended by the "driver-centric" computer system and ended up at a bodega that didn't ask for any ID at all.

I'm about two more experiences from being one of those "cash only" people at this point. LAMO

Once, at a bar in a very small town in rural Kansas, I was asked for ID. I only had my passport. When I showed it to the bartender, she asked "do you have anything government-issued?"

I kind of wish I'd said "Why do you need my ID? I'm not trying to listen to spotify in the UK or anything!"

But I'm also glad I didn't say that because I doubt the dude would have known what it meant and I just wanted to leave.
