#immaculategrid x #baseballMix of Reds and a couple Negro Leaguers. Gary Redus didn’t work today, so I went with Wilson Redus.
Don’t usually use pitchers hitting 300 or batters with 1 good game pitching. Did today.
I was at the game when Valdéz got the win shutting out the Reds in the top of the 18th. He gave up 3 absolute rockets, two to the track and 1 a line out. Painful.
Cheers!

No idea how stressful Dibble was as a closer, but Randy Myers in San Diego felt like he was walking the bases loaded and then striking out the side.
And today I learned that Moisés Alou was born in Atlanta, not the Dominicana.

Dibble was electric, but I know what you mean. No fan base is really ever happy with their closer, because the failures are always more memorable than the successes.
Knew a Phillies fan who would just get up and leave when Jose Mesa came in; his nerves couldn’t take it. And that was in the 2 good seasons, before Mesa collapsed in ‘03.
Ben Lindbergh on Effectively Wild talks about how his Mom thought Mariano Rivera was bad because he blew Game 7 in 2001.

On a related note, Emilio Pagan was absolutely terrific this year and I hated it every time he came in.

He really struggled to find consistency in San Diego. Many fans were relieved when he was traded. Hopefully he has a few good years.

Yeah, Pagan seems to be really good right up until he leaves a meatball right in the middle of the plate. Even this year his HR% was notably above league average.
Not ideal for a closer.
