    Concept:

    Modified multi-color 3D printer that takes sticks of encastic painting wax. Print on aged flat oak panels.

    Print high quality images in wax. Cover with a layer of clear encastic wax by hand to seal.

    Encastic paintings last for centuries with very little care beyond being stored in a forgiving temperature range.

    Now you have automated a way to preserve a photograph for the ages.

      The only thing that might be more robust is a bronze sculpture. But that would mean not saving the colors.

        Please do not print hot wax onto small expensive dogs, no mater how wooden they may seem.

            An oil painting on wood will also last a long time, but it may require more regular care to look as good as it did the day you made it.

            A mosaic is also very durable. But you need a good place to bury it. Can't just put it in a box in the back of the attic with a label that says "treasure"

              @futurebird I attended a demo of encaustic wax painting last year & it looked fun but dangerous. I didn’t realize the wax would last so long!

                @jmax

                There was a typo:

                Print on aged flat oak spaniels.

                I was worried someone like you might see it and then... well.

                  @superflippy

                  Not only will it last but you can get colors that won't fade. They have found ancient examples of this work and it looks... new.

                      @michaelgemar

                      One would need to make CYMK wax sheets with colorfast pigments... But... this might be a more elegant way to get it done and capture more detail.
