An old phone with a cracked screen is the new “new iPhone” the only way to one up some with this is to have either an eink screen OR pull out a blackberry or flip phone that somehow still does modern apps in some janky way.

I expect in five years companies will catch on and manufacture such things to keep up. Bespoke and retro— pleasant to touch and use.
Unless they can really offer something that catches the imagination of the public. #trends #fashion
@futurebird
In the musical instrument world (particularly guitars) new "relic" instrument have been a thing for some time, where the manufacturers take a new guitar then apply dents/damage/wear off the finish to simulate the look and "vibe" of older, road-worn instruments. Some people like it; some people hate it.Nevertheless, when I saw my first "cracked screen" lock screen on a device, I predicted factory "reilic'ing" of smartphones and tablets wasn't far off.

yeah, I managed to break my screen again.
I went into the little Apple Store and tried holding the newest iPhone. It’s so top heavy. I doubt it would last a week so I may end up getting the screen repaired again. That is if bits of glass start flaking off of it.
the glass on iphone sucks. it is definitely not gorilla glass. Why do they make them so fragile.
-
@futurebird I was looking at eink phones last year... Got very tempted!
they are gradually becoming more practical obviously there will always be trade-offs but part of why you go to the E ink is so you can stop thinking about charging your phone —-and just stop thinking about your phone in general

@futurebird Just slap some sellotape on it, it'll be fine.

@futurebird nokia/hmd makes a flip phone that's fairly usable and I'm very tempted

@futurebird I am so glued to mine I think something with a slower refresh rate that's better for reading long-form might be better. And I'm running out of options for ones that fit my hands anyway so why not fully give up on a small one and just have a book

I only ever buy second hand though and I wait until the battery basically can't hold a charge (I am part of the cracked screen brigade) so it'll be a while before this is an issue again... -

One of the reasons I just can’t bring myself to get that new iPhone? Well I would be embarrassed to carry it around. It sticks out a little bit. It’s a little bigger and has that … unseemly inappropriate bulge.
It might’ve been wise for them to have just released some new colorways the similar form factor to the older phones.
I can’t tell why it needs to bulge out like that. It’s not like they’ve improved the macro camera.
is this something that appeals to men is that why I don’t get it?

@futurebird I have the new iPhone non-Pro and am very happy with it. I think the Pro is ugly.

@futurebird I don't know. I have short fingers and I hate how big smart phones are now. Besides being an irresistible lure to my ADHD I also can't use them one handed anymore unless I put them in one handed mode, which is STILL big and unwieldy but shrinks the screen down to a 4 inch diagonal window the size of phones I had years ago.

there’s no way I’m taking a downgrade on macro photography and *not* getting in the pro so I won’t be getting a new phone
when buying a new phone, these are the most important things to consider in order :
1. how well can a photograph ants?
2. size (not too big)
3. compatibility
4. How well can it display photos of ants? -

@futurebird My preferred form factor for a phone is something like the iPhone SE, so as a man, no, that does not appeal to me. No idea about other men.

@futurebird How many years can Apple let go by before they grit their teeth and release a new reasonable-sized phone? They can’t ignore so many customers forever.

@futurebird have there really been many improvements to phones in the last ten years, other than just having more RAM and CPU? i don't think so.
in the early days of Android, i thought it was pretty cool and liked the idea of being able to access my desktop from my phone in an ssh app, or move files around using FTP or SMB instead of needing a cable plugged in. but it has been a pretty uninspiring journey from "wow cool game" to "ok now the games are all shit, the apps mostly all do the same things, and sometimes i will just stare at my phone trying to feel inspired to do something with it that isn't being a phone."

@futurebird I would love some kind of mini option

I will never be caught dead with a phablet not now not ever.

Apple can, though,

@futurebird honestly I’m going to hold onto my SE 2022 until they release some new thing that’s relatively small with a home button and touch id or until this one dies completely. Just zero interest in the direction Apple has been heading with phone design.
