Anyone else notice an uptick in items being shipped to the US getting mutilated with a razor by customs? (never had this happen before and now it's happened twice in a single month) First it was my custom spirograph from Poland. (Box was destroyed with a razor.) Then this very nice hand bound leather journal from Brazil.
The boxes in both cases could have been opened and resealed without taking a razor blade to them damaging the item. I'm pretty upset to see this lovely book cut up like this.

@futurebird Horrible to see. :(]
I guess there's no redress? (Even if there were, it wouldn't fix the damage).

The seller seemed to have shipping insurance so I'm sending the images this and the outside of the box and paperwork to them so they can maybe make a claim.
I may also try to call about it since this has happened TWICE.
The first time they just ruined the box (a nice handmade box for storing the spirograph, but not the drawing machine itself, so I didn't think much of it. )

@futurebird OK, leaving all the ghastly nonsense aside, I'm sure that with some care and super glue you can make that slice disappear. You shouldn't have to, and yes it sucks but you can make it disappear from the object, if not from your heart.
I'm sorry, that sucks.
Like, that's so sucky I wish I could reach out and fix it for you, just make it go away.

I really hope this isn't some "new thing" but it feels like it's a "new thing" since it happened twice.
Government operating with pure contempt and spite. Not just opening packages for not reason but letting you know by always needlessly BREAKING something.

@futurebird @mikeolson (sigh), it's a 'new thing' isn't it?
We'll see a news story about it within a week. -

We'll see a news story about it within a week.I buy handmade items internationally often from these places and others. I've never seen boxes sliced open like this.
I did have one arrive opened, years ago, but it was opened and resealed with a little note from customs. This just came in a plastic bag which I tore open before I realized what had happened.

@futurebird @mikeolson I wonder if these 'new rules' involve slashing every package they get?
International courier giant DHL pauses packages over $800 to US amid tighter Customs rules - Times of India
International-Business News: DHL has temporarily halted package deliveries exceeding $800 from businesses to individual customers in the U.S. This decision comes in response to U.

Well nothing I buy is over $800 but I bet maybe they open those with more care?
This reeks of someone saying "well open every single one till you find it" with no concept of what that would mean.

Yeah. I'll fix it but it's such an INSULT to the careful work of the book binder.
I kind of want to fix it visibly. Because it's part of the book's story. But for now I'm just mad.

@futurebird I saw a photo this month where US customs had trashed a 3000$ sealed game from Japan
