Today I had to explain to a kid what a check was which they understood after some context, but then explaining how you had to go to the bank and use and envelope to deposit checks shocked them.

It occurs to me that the whole tradition of giving people a "giant check" for a sweepstakes may not be as significant as it once was.
Also giant checks are perfectly valid if they have all the details, so I wonder if photo deposit works on them.

I haven't touched a paper check since this child was born... so I shouldn't be surprised.

@futurebird cheques seem to be a tool mostly in particular niches. When I was working in banking deceased estates a couple of years back they were still fairly commonly requested when disbursing estates

They make sense for one time payments between parties that won't do future payments.

But also ever since my students have found they can annoy me by calling the 90s "the olden days" I'm a little suspicious when they start asking about something like it's ancient history.

@futurebird “do that again and you have to submit your report in Latin. Once more and it will be Ancient Greek. And then ancient Egyptian. I can go on.”

A student wrote a story where one of the plot points was that "it was long ago so they didn't have a phone on them" but explained in the most laborious way.
It was both delightful and distressing to read.

@futurebird their is a Reddit community "ask old people" the cut off is you have to be born before 1980.
There are plenty of questions about how you survived without cellphones and internet.

There used to be an "oldies" music station here in the Twin Cities that played '60s and '70s pop.
When I moved back; I discovered that they are still the oldies station but they are now playing "80s, 90s, and 2k".
