So, I've been checking the plastic connector tubes of the carpenter ant enclosure, and they have been... working. They are persistent. Gnawing down the tube slowly over months and months. I think they can sense the airflow, I will try some putty to see if I can get them to stop gnawing.
Though this is one of the things I love about ant colonies, all of them together manage to do things that not one of them alone could imagine. But, there is purpose in the sum of their tiny choices.

This reminds me of when I washed the sand of an ant colony and returned it to them still wet and they made all of these strange fractal patterns because something about the stickiness of the sand set off their desire to build in a strange way.
Anyway better get those air gaps closed or it might not be me posting here next time.

Sounds like you have fun, are the ants work or leisure?Probably one of the strangest things I ever did at work was shave some cows. We got a lot of good science out of them and some great student projects.
