Adrian Tchaikovsky's fantasy novels feel kind of derivative on the surface. It's all very much like a D&D campaign. But, even in these earlier works there are deeper things going on. So, if you can enjoy a fantasy romp you'll find yourself in for something much deeper.
His more recent novels are more sophisticated. He's one of those fantasy authors with sci-fi under currents that he doesn't explore as much as I wanted, although that keeps them mysterious and fun.

@futurebird I liked his scifi and in the fantasy genre his Tyrant Philosophers series was really great, but I've read some of his shorter works and they're ehhhh. Right now I'm listening to his audiobook "Spiderlight." It's ok, D&D adventure fantasy type. He sure seems to like spiders.

He's gotta have pet spiders. He gets them and their ways.
People always tell me he also understands ants but this isn't as true IMO. However I have a very high bar for that.

@futurebird Do you count "And put away childish things" as a fantasy novel? I quite liked it and it did not feel like a D&D campaign to me.

I was only counting the explicitly fantasy stuff as fantasy. That's meta fantasy.
