"Civilization has declined. Why don't we have an atrium with a pool for rainwater like they did in Pompeii?"
This guy is driving me nuts. BECAUSE WE HAVE WINTER AND THIS IS NYC.
OMG. And we have a whole system of reservoirs in upstate NY so you and drink snowmelt and rainwater and it's better than an Atrium. And you don't need to have someone gather wood just so you can take a hot bath.
(But, if this were the mediterranean maybe we could talk then.)

It’s always amazing to note that (last I read about it), NYC’s water is more or less untreated. Straight from God’s hand to your toilet. It’s awesome.
(Same in Barbados, which really does have the best tasting tap water I’ve ever had.)

Oh it's treated too. But, you want to start with something that needs as little of that as possible.

Dude, great idea except that only the rich people actually had houses with atriums. How’s that going to work out for the rest of us?

@KanaMauna @futurebird So much our respect of past technology skips over that it was only available to the rich.
Most of us were much more likely to be maintaining the hypocaust than enjoying warm floors.

Yep. Even at its height, the Roman population was only about 20% urban. Not too many had access to a decent atrium.

It is remarkable and delightful that there are aspects of Roman life that might seem tolerable or familiar to a modern person from a city today. Aspects. For some people. Some of the time.
They were sill living in a world of mysteries and horrors I don't think I'd like to visit for more than two weeks tops.

Whatever you do, do NOT use their mouthwash. And if you visit the Colosseum, don’t ask where the concession stands food comes from.

I can still remember, how baffled I was when I found out (roundabout ending primary school) that Rome and NYC were basically on the same latitude (OK, 1° off) and that Alaska was the only US state on the same as my home town.
