    The cops in LA are more out of control than normal in the footage of these protests.

    They are shooting into crowds who are standing in a park with signs during the day well before curfew. Throwing tear gas. And also not saying anything? There are no instructions to leave or anything being given as they try to make the protest end.

    It's not about keeping the streets clear for cars. They are acting like having a protest is illegal.

    This is LAPD too. What is they mayor doing?

      Is it legal to gather in the park and shout slogans and hold some signs to petition the government for redress of grievances or nah?

      I think it can be easy to get jaded and assume that when people get injured by police in protests they must have "done something" eg not gone on the sidewalk when asked by the police* or whatever but this isn't true. We don't really live in a country where protest is defacto legal anymore and this has been the case more and more over time.

      Do you like that?

        @futurebird I was talking to a family member who expressed concern whether an event had a permit and I said β€œfrom a practical standpoint, I get that you want to reduce your risk of getting hurt by the police, but from a legal standpoint, the event does not actually need a permit.”

          @platypus

          The good news seems to be that if there are enough people and if enough of them are white, not under 30 and middle-class looking police won't try as hard to shut the event down. But I've seen video from LA of a park full of people in broad day light just holding signs and getting shot at for existing.

          The crowd was about half white people and mostly younger which is why I think the police decided they could escalate.

            The young people were doing nothing. Keeping their distance from the police, not even yelling much or seeming angry (yelling and angry being perfectly normal protest things to do)

            There was no pretext for the use of force at all. Zero.

              I'm scared of police and I will leave if I see too many of them. It is maybe sad that I can be intimidated easily but I'm very small and not steady on my feet because I have a bad leg. Also I'm scared and you can make fun of me for that or whatever BUT

              That doesn't make it right or good that police are intimidating people from protesting if they want to. That isn't their supossed job. That isn't serving the public or a good use of "muh tax dollars"

              I'm glad there are videos!

                    Unfortunately, I’m not sure the mayor disapproves of this. Frankly, it’s idiotic beyond belief since in California almost all the discretionary funds come from sales taxes and those will take a big hit during any prolonged protest. But unfortunately politicians are not usually selected according to their clear levelheaded thinking.
