We got one crop of political junk mail last week but these THIRTY glossy fliers all came since the election was over! I even got the one where they made the beard “more muslim” what a waste of paper!
One of the Cuomo fliers didn’t have a union bug (offensive)
The first crop was about 35 fliers for two people ... so that's over SIXTY for just one primary.
We didn't get anything from Democrats for the general.
This is the biggest downside to always voting in every election including primaries. I'm kind of proud of my solid voting record however the spam...? good lord.
Interestingly almost none of the candidates who spammed me by mail reached me with a single radio, TV or other advertisement at all. Because like most people my age I don't use any of that media and have 999 million ad-blockers.
Maybe they should do a minecraft PVP let's play livestream? That's might work.
I'd TOTALLY watch that.

@futurebird The Union Bug thing seems like such a massive vulnerability. As an opponent send out a flyer lacking a bug in support of a top D candidate to their supporters that would care most about it. Hurts them, cheap for the opposition.

This is one of those cases where I think that was somehow far down on the list of reasons people were mad at him. But I still found it obnoxious.

"Cuomo is endorsed by hotel and gaming trades council"
huh. I guess they wanted everyone who wasn't rich to vote for Mamdani.

Is it odd that I would be more likely to read a simple letter in an envelope?
My eyes glaze over when I see these things. It is work to look at them at all and I mostly don't.
Couldn't they send just one clear letter instead of 20 of these huge fliers?
Also the texture of the printing is gross. They are unpleasant to touch.

They don't even make good fire starters which is rude as grilling season begins.

They smell bad and are slightly sticky in the most offputting way. I assume if burned the fumes would kill.

@futurebird
way back in the 1990s I had a post office job in which I had to load about 150,000 letters a day into a sorting machine. And sometimes huge metal crates full of super glossy icky feeling advertisements like these would come through. -

@futurebird oh that’s a great idea. May I suggest a small change?
Group the candidates in teams and have them build something specific.
Maybe a small village with food supply, transport, work, and resources for the villagers and other players.
At least I would be interested in seeing whether they manage to self organize and create something and how individual candidates apply themselves.

There should also be some regular people involved.
A few kids who know a lot about the game, a cranky old person, an actual engineer who'd be aghast at the nonsense physics of the game...

@futurebird Are you saying that that stuff is addressed to you specifically, rather than just dropped into every household's mailbox?

Alternately it could be a D&D game, but I think the constraints of a literal game like minecraft would make it more material... playing an RP game would be too vulnerable to BS.
Did you get the diamonds or nah?
Is your automatic farm working?
Why not?
etc. -

They seem to know I'm a teacher based on some of the fliers, but that's about it.
To their credit they do send us fliers in English, while my next door neighbor who mostly speaks Spanish gets them in Spanish... however she says the translations were very clunky and hard to read.

Some of my friends who are married don't get two fliers and I wonder if it might be because my husband and I aren't the same race, which is the other data they seem to have?
They also struggle to get that right for same sex couples.
hm.

They didn't send the one where they made his beard darker to me... but they sent that one to my husband who's white.
CHARMING MR.CUOMO just what I want in a NYC mayor.
OMG go jump in a lake.
(on second thought do not jump in the lake it would be bad for the water and environment)

It's good for politicians to target mailers and advertising, but this should always be done with the assumption that voters talk to each other.
For example if I find out that a politician sent a teacher a message about unions and improving education that seems sensible and like they are interested in who the voters are.
But if you try to talk behind people's backs? Try to be a progressive to some voters but regressive to others?
hooo boy. That makes you seem creepy and untrustworthy.

Ultimately it's the sense that they think they can "triangulate" me (say one thing to me and another to less left leaning democrats) that has me very sour on most of the party moderates.
It's just dishonest.
And it's condescending.
But I find that moderate Democrats who found success doing this kind of trick with Bubba and Obama still think it will work and it just doesn't.
