Given the country and the setting those are red wood ants. They have massive colonies that are often a huge pile of pine needles and other debris put over a dead tree stump. It could be 4' tall. They using their massive nests to survive the winters.
I don't know why they have a highway. Maybe they are moving because their nest was disturbed? Or could it be a great food source? Did you find out where they were going or coming from?
