No ads.
No* algorithm.
No tracking.
No influence campaigns.
No AI.
No face scanning.
No bots.Just people on the internet talking to each other about all the little pointless things, (and big incredible things) in our lives.
*I realize that the demonization of the term "algorithm" in social media is unfortunate in many ways. The demonization of the words "social media" itself is also missing the point. But this is about a simple take on what I think a lot of people are looking for right now.

That's why I try to always say "no recommendation algorithm" instead of "no algorithm"

Recommendation algorithms could be good and helpful in some cases. I use one I made to help me find posts from people who don't post often and thus their posts get buried here.
A simple:
show me one (1) post from each person I follow from the last month is very powerful for finding out what people who are less active are posting. You know those people who only post like once a week... but then it's always some amazing photo they took or an incredible insight on some event.

Nice I think a recommendation algorithm is similar to home automation in that pretty much all of my complaints about it go away when mine is deterministic and under my control

We have really messed up on home automation. The possibilities were limitless. But all I have are light bulbs that spy on me.

@futurebird On the algorithm, I actually would really like the ability to curate and sort posts based on quickly rising, accounts I boost/like/reply to more often, stuff like that. Especially if it's just a ranking algorithm, it doesn't collect any additional information that you don't already give to Mastodon, and we're committed not to sell ads already, I'm not sure what the hatred for anything other than reverse chronological order is on here

The hatred comes from a place of deep trauma and betrayal.
