“if you’re listening, God, please don’t make it hard to know if we should believe the things that we see

Tell us: should we run away? Should we try and stay? or would it just be better just to let things be?”

this line from Dorothy‘s headline song “home” from “The Wiz” never really resonated with me … until recently

now, I think about it all the time

I also enjoy that Charlie Smalls has rhymed the word "God" with "hard"

Which works (just) if you have the right NYC accent... but not otherwise.

Diana is from Detroit and makes it work. And is so good at singing that... why would you even care if it didn't?

Stephanie Mills is from Brooklyn but doesn't make it rhyme. Maybe it's too old school for her.

Or maybe she was just in a pit of despair because she's singing a song that Ross ... defined. She is excellent... But listen I would never want to try to be a follow up act to Diana Ross. Just cry and go home.

Is this the "dying NYC accent" everyone is so sad about?

My *students* think "God" rhymes with "hard"

              @catmisgivings

That's what people from California think NYC sounds like.

The worst fake NYC accent is that one that Meowth has. I have never heard ANYONE who sounds like that in my life.

IDK maybe that's how Pica sounds but she pretends she can't talk around humans.

Adding it to my head cannon that ALL cats have a terrible fake NYC accent. That's just how it works.

I have a spreadsheet of accents that catch my ear for being "natural" but distinctive. Minor obsession.

I like the way both of them say "robits" ... this seems to be going away. But it was common in US English a generation ago.

@futurebird @darkling @catmisgivings I have never in my lifetime heard anyone in person (or on live/modern TV) say "robit" but wow they sure said it a lot on a lot of really old TV/movies. I guess Asimov was a product of such times, so he certainly would have heard it that way a lot.

I just... I don't understand where that pronunciation even came from. It's literally spelled rob*ot, not robi*it... How do you just suddenly randomly change an 'o' to an 'i' every time despite seeing how it's spelled?

@futurebird @darkling @catmisgivings I have never in my lifetime heard anyone in person (or on live/modern TV) say "robit" but wow they sure said it a lot on a lot of really old TV/movies. I guess Asimov was a product of such times, so he certainly would have heard it that way a lot.

I wonder if it was a product of the clipped high diction of "radio voice" where everything was said with a kind of clarity that was meant to overcome static?
