    @nazokiyoubinbou @futurebird

Punchline: I bought a Fellow Carter mug and the plastic layer inside the ceramic inside is the best I found.
I only taste what I'm drinking, not the container.

I have a shelf full of insulated travel mugs leftover from my year long experiment. I can't give them away because I always start with this pitch and the person I'm talking to doesn't want a second rate mug.

P.S. The Fellow move mug fits into a cup holder, you may prefer that.

@shapr @futurebird This makes me wonder again if thermal transfer rates play a role of some sort. You're getting the slightly more insulative capabilities of the ceramic, but the neutrality of the plastic.

Or I just have absolutely no idea at all. 😆

@shapr @futurebird I looked them up and they say they're ceramic coated on the inside, not plastic?

@nazokiyoubinbou @futurebird Thermal transfer was part of my measurements!
I'd put boiling water in the mug and check the temperature the next day. The screw down lid of those mugs won that part too!
But "only taste what I'm drinking" was the most important factor in the end.

I've found my solution is "have a fancy cup"

I have a glass straw, and a titanium insulated cup with ice cold water. Always drink it empty without thinking about it much.

But just get something you are attracted to. Yes, it's the same water in "any cup" but I don't think my deeper brain agrees.

@nazokiyoubinbou @futurebird huh, I don't think that's what it said when I bought the first one two years ago.
Thank you, I learned a thing!

@shapr @futurebird Well, by thermal transfer I mean the more immediate effects of how it affects temperature right now with lids off and etc as you're drinking rather than thermal insulation over time. So you'd have to measure over a much much shorter period to get that aspect of it. By measuring the long term you're just getting the whole thing's overall insulativeness.

I still haven't figured this out though. That was just a guess.

EDIT: They have a good point on their mention of why they use ceramic coating. Ceramic (and glass) are probably less absorbent of various odors and tastes. That too may be part of all this, but I forget where that stands on metals. I assume metals are bad, but why are energy drinks better in them?

I'm a big fan of the "kepo boomboom cup" because the lid is fun to play with and it has no ridges to screw in the lid, it's just smooth. The ridges really bothered me for no rational reason.

It's popular in South Korea and at this point I trust their stores more than the US to get such things right. Really the quality of things made for the big city China and SK markets is always higher than what they send to the US. There are things we never even see.

Basically I'm at the point where I regard amazon as *more* sketchy than aliexpress ... while they are both in their own way sketchy.

@futurebird This is a cool coincidence. I'm in a store shopping for a water bottle right now .

Saw the nurse last week and they said my kidneys are struggling a bit cos, apparently, coffee isn't a substitute for water. So I thought, I need a fancy water cup. 🙂

@davidnjoku @futurebird My OH and I often talk about when there's a particularly crappy/boring job that needs to be done, you buy a "toy" to make it more interesting. Last week I bought a handheld paint scuttle. You'll never guess what I've been doing this morning.

@futurebird @shapr I've been trying to find the one I use, but it seems to be gone from... everywhere.

Well, Walmart still has a product page at least.
