It is a stimulant.

Apart from the scandals, these emails really bring home how unremarkable and pathetic billionaires are. They clearly owe most of their immense wealth to luck and/or nepotism and/or corruption.

Kind of glad I'm not super wealthy since it attracts some of the strangest parasites ...
I am poor enough that I know all of the people hanging around me really must like me for some reason.

They are so banal and pathetic especially in the things that they think of as secrets anyone would care about.
And even more in the abuse and crimes they commit but can't even recognize as crimes.
And the way they use email, the lack of OPSEC is disgusting.

Choosing to hoard so much money that one cannot possibly spend it does seem like something has gone badly wrong in their minds.
They could buy the very best stuff for themselves, their family and all their friends and they'd still have most of their money left over. Why would anyone want that much?
