I didn't realize that there isn't a consensus on what animal head Set has. It could be a donkey, an anteater, an aardvark, a dog... or just a "set animal" which is what this thing is called when no one can make up their mind. (Maybe it's like a Griffin and just a jumble-beast)
Set goes all the way back to Scorpion II who was one of the first Egyptian kings and also the king with the most gamer sounding name.
What do you think this droopy besnouted mofo is?
I confess I thought he was a dog and got him mixed up with Anubis.
I'm totally getting eaten by a crocodile when I die for this.

@futurebird composite animals were quite common in egyptian mythology. they tend to take on several aspects of various animals that represent their domain (Even Horus isn't represented as a single species of Falcon, but shows characteristics of multiple native raptors). what exact animals make up set is under debate, but generally its accepted that its some kind of desert canids (fox, dog, hyena) and some other desert animals like the aadvark and donkey from beyond the nile valley (given that set is a desert god)

@futurebird you have to be on really Really REALLY good terms with the god of chaos and destruction to try a snoot grab. If not, you're likely to find all the sofa cushions shredded and stuffing spread throughout the house.

@futurebird if it's not meant to represent a composite animal, then it most closely resembles a borzoi.
but if it's a compoosite, head of an African sacred ibis, ears of a fennec fox, body of a jackal.

@futurebird @neia Or in Malay. Tapirs have been in Malay for millions of years. : )
Later clairificaiton: I think it's quite unlikely ancient Egyptians would have known about Malayan tapirs, though it's not as far out as tapirs from the Americas.

Any chance this was a real, but extinct, animal that we haven't discovered yet?

This seems unlikely to me. But, this would make a good premise for a story IMHO.

@futurebird Another thought: Ancient egyptians kept cheetah, and trained them for hunting, and the body of the Set animal might be inspired by the body of a cheetah (though the head surely is not).

by the way; although Africa has aardvarks, they're not especially similar, nor closely related to the anteaters of south and central America, whose nearest relatives are sloths. Aardvarks are probably most closely related to tenrecs and sengis (elephant "shrews", which aren't closely related to shrews).

Never forget the Seth joke from Stargate SG-1:"A serpent guard, a Horus guard and a Setesh guard meet on a neutral planet.
It is a tense moment.
The serpent guard's eyes glow.
The Horus guard's beak glistens.
The Setesh guard's nose drips."
