Put age verification on LinkIN and you can only use it if you are over 100

Sorry I got off topic and distracted by how annoying and corrosive "LinkedIn Culture" is how it seems to suck the living souls from human beings and bring out the most synthetic, empty, dangerous takes.

@futurebird I hate it so much
I only log in when our team needs to recruit someone or something
It immediately makes me hate everyone and everything

Is it really that hard to do hiring without it? We are able to mostly avoid it, but I work in education and if you want to know about someone you call the schools where they worked last. It ain't that deep.

How do you define "social media" ?

            Is youTube social media?

            What about bugguide.net?

            Is LinkedIN?

            Minecraft?

            Email?

I do think a definition is possible. Social media are online applications that allow social interactions in a mix of public, and/or private groups and networks.

Email is not social media (though usenet might be)

Bugguide and minecraft have social media functions but are not primarily social applications.

            LinkedIN is a cancer.

@futurebird We’re having the political debate in NZ too about whether we should ban young people from social media. Lots of righteous noise is being made. I’ve been a bit puzzled by it. It’s a clear admission that some social media is socially corrosive and dangerous. However, I don’t see that as an inherent feature of all social media, just a characteristic of certain poorly regulated big corporate for-profit social media platforms that we all know. I'd be happier banning all of those from NZ (if they cannot be effectively regulated) than I would be at trying (and mostly likely failing) to keep young people off all social media.

"It’s a clear admission that some social media is socially corrosive and dangerous."

Exactly. These "social media is so bad, ban the children" people have recognized that something is deeply wrong with some of the most popular and influential social media used by adults. Their own experiences with propaganda, immersive relentless advertising, bullying, misinformation have shown them how these spaces are harmful but they don't think anything can be done about it.

Also I'm all in on the theory that "age verification" is just an attempt to mine everyone for identity data and the policies have nothing to do with online safety.

I have not encountered anyone who organically supports these policies or thinks they will help at all.

The people who are sincerely invested in the safety of online spaces are silent or say it won't work.

Many people are scared to say anything critical. Don't fall for that.

@futurebird however you define it, I would prefer the fediverse not get lumped in with facebook, or with the hellspace formerly known as twitter.

@futurebird @FlockOfCats Please no. The alternative is Mastodon full of "I got age-locked out of LinkedIn. Here's five things it taught me"-posts

@futurebird @tantramar I think anything that enables group chat should be considered social technology. Which includes multirecipient emails and mailing lists.

Social media would be when it can be accessed & consumed by uninvolved parties. Forums and such.

Social networking is when you have a timeline and follows/followers.

And some offerings blur the line. Other offerings turn it into a mutated social toxic waste dump.

@futurebird @tantramar addendum: having an "algorithm" makes it something different than social networking, I feel. It puts a thumb on the scale, undemocratizing it.

It's more of a social feeding trough, in that case.

                              More like social conditioning.

I don't know how people stay in those spaces if you really think about what would be possible.

@futurebird @joncounts I was talking to my nephew (17), and they proposed banning adults from social media. I think that would be a much more impactful approach.
