What is the English language up to with these words? I feel like we've caught the language in the act with this one. We must either make these distinct words or pick the one with the WORSE spelling and decide it's the only correct word.

@futurebird well, the usually offered etymology is that they come from the same Italian word ... : ) A doublet, as the linguists say ... ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doublet_(linguistics) )
But "galleria" usually refers to a covered area with shops, while "gallery" usually refers to some place art is exhibited, whether for sale or for public appreciation.

Galleria: a failing mall built in the '60s or '70s, shambling along because people still go to that one place with the turkey curry in the remains of the food court, across from where the Radio Shack was.

When people talk about all the churches that have closed I think about the radio shacks that are no longer with us.
