like... that's literally what skins and lootboxes are. it's a form of gambling. i don't engage in it because it's pointless but some people spend like, WILD amounts of money on it
Games for kids should not have lootboxes. It's gambling. It's a kiddie casino. Why do we get a social media ban for kids but not something like that? (I know why, I just think we should be asking about this more often and much louder.)

Further all forms of gambling (for adults) should have a simple to sign up for "self exclusion" option. This is done by casinos already. You can sign up to be on a list and they won't let you in to gamble. People use these services because in dark moments they know they have a problem.
If your game (for adults) has lootboxes you need to offer self exclusion.

Making money off of people gambling is just exploiting an obvious flaw in the way the human brain works.

@futurebird @mynameistillian what do you think about arcade games like Chuck e cheese and Dave n busters? Where you do the kiddy casino game, win tickets, and get prizes? I feel like for a lot of kids it's harmless fun but a few get addicted and you see them as adults in D&B.

Kids can't go to D&B's unattended. I do recall that my Baptist church advised parents not to let kids "play at gambling" at such places when I was young.
Personally I don't think total prohibition is realistic or needed. (Because then you will have black market for gambling.) But D&B's should have an exclusion list. And I don't care if they are a casualty of effort to eliminate more obviously destructive enterprises. Does that make some sense?

@futurebird Could you imagine if there were a national registry where you could add yourself and it would legally require all businesses involved in gambling to bar you from participating, and bar all targeted ad companies to from showing you gambling ads? I'm not even particularly susceptible to gambling (vs achievement chasing and other gamification tools) and I'd sign up in a heartbeat.

Can we also have this for alcohol and all the newish tobacco-adjacent things? -

You want society to take basic steps to help addicts heal and thrive? Preposterous.
