When I was younger, a century seemed like a big thing.

Events of the past (like WW2) seemed far away.

As I grow older, the perspective changes; entire eras suddenly seem almost ephemeral, and, when looking back, it seems astonishing how much history can fit in a single lifetime.

@mina in the 90ies we were told we have reached the end of history (fukoyama) because liberal democracy won.

Well that hypothesis didn't age particular well.

        Indeed. What a spectacular misjudgement!

Historical events you have personally experienced start to rhyme with each other. Decades collapse together. You're no longer looking at the abstract past, it becomes a system.

It could be exhilarating if we weren't all in the same meat grinder.

@mina My Grand-Ma once literally lived through 5 completely different political systems - and 2 WWs - in only 92 years: monarchy, democracy, fascism, stalinism, democracy.

So far, I have only 2 systems and zero WWs.

This, the events of our own lifetime melting into a single thing, I find understandable.

But how my feeling about past eras changed in last couple of years, took me by surprise.
