Someone 3D printed that little nazi trinket for him and he was showing it to everyone ... I think he's given up on it? I hope?
@futurebird @robotistry @waitworry I just saw him waving it around (again?) like... yesterday. But I didn't check to confirm it was fresh that day, maybe it was old.

I bet we could print something much more funny and get him to wave it around...

@futurebird I recognise that I don't get a say since it's not my country, but I've been feeling the exact same way. Unless there's a tradition that presidents must never change the white house then I can't get animated about this.
Over here in Britain, there was a scandal about Boris Johnson redecorating No.10. I didn't like the man, but couldn't give a shit.
The real scandal, I guess, is that Johnson & Trump have taken money from donors to pay for it
@robotistry -
I think it’s more about the fact that he’s a real estate developer. The one thing that he actually knows is how to do is a real estate project: he has actual experience, knows the process end to end. It’s probably very comforting for him to work on something where he’s not out of his depth.
(for this reason the only thing I don’t worry about with this clown show is the white house construction)
I'm wondering about the destruction of the East Wing in relation to the office of the First Lady. Is part of the motivation to diminish the role of the First Lady? Where will future First Ladies (or First Gentlemen) have their office?

They can build one if they want? They still have a little budget and staff ... which I find kind of silly but I guess it makes sense.
-
I expect the new ballroom wing to be just as bad as what it replaced. In that sense it will be a continuation of the tradition of this kind of architecture.
But if we need to tear the wing down again we can.
@futurebird @robotistry @waitworry Have you *SEEN* Trump's designs? It's going to be much much much worse... Not just ugly, but ostentatious with gold plating on things and etc. It's going to be not just an eyesore, but physically painful to look at.

@nazokiyoubinbou @robotistry @waitworry
Trump Tower lobby is OK. It's very 80s and a bit too much gold, but he hired some good people and it still looks like this now. It didn't get run down over the years.
40 Wall St. is more ugly. But it is NOT the ugliest lobby on the block.

@futurebird @robotistry @waitworry I'm thinking maybe more like Mar-a-Lago and such.
This isn't a thing to "sell" to anyone though regardless. This is a thing for showing off how much power he has as the dictator of America. It's going to be maximum tasteless on principle.

@nazokiyoubinbou @robotistry @waitworry
Here is the lobby of "Trump Park Ave." It screams "this is rich people stuff"
It's also kind of what the white house already looks like? Or the same kind of intention at least.
In fact, what I see most from his projects is it's like what an LLM would spit out. Inoffensive, bland, fancy stuff ...

Mar-a-Lago is ugly but show me a country club that isn't. Show me a single good looking country club.
The whole concept calls for offensive ugliness. That is the architectural language of an "exclusive place" ... it can't feel welcoming. That is not the point.

@futurebird @robotistry @waitworry Perhaps. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I'm expecting him to make something even more grossly offensive than even that.
And, naturally, he won't spare a single penny of our tax dollars in doing it.

I don't know why this distinction between "mad dictator who is making everything gold and ugly" and "cookie cutter wealth signaling" matters to me.
Both are bad.
But also, it's not like there is any way that someone would think about what "the white house" would be if this were ... a different sort of country.

I screams "faux riche", a canned and pathetic type of conspicuous consumption by rather grotesque people who are feeding their egos and power trips. UGLY!!!

Then two thirds of the lobbies on Park Ave. are ugly... and so is the white house now.
Which... I mean I kind of agree.

I think what's bugging me is that it can seem like there are people who can recognize the ugliness of conspicuous wealth signaling when it's Trump... but if anyone else is doing it they don't notice.
I don't think you or even most people on here are doing this, but the MSNBC hosts who have been crying all week about this live in the same street as the lobby I posted.

@nazokiyoubinbou @futurebird @robotistry @waitworry Dirty little secrets of the rich:
- Nearly all of them got that way through luck.
- They have no taste.
- They’re boring.
- They’re generally not as good as they think they are, partly because not even they know these secrets.

@nazokiyoubinbou @SistaWendy @robotistry @waitworry
Yeah... I have not enjoyed learning about how central this kind of... guy was to "the well connected" at all.
This is what you did with it? All that wealth and power?
You could have built a giant bronze ant statue for the people.
You could have made a library.
You could have hired the best expert in your favorite thing to teach you how to do it.
Or even just lay on a pile of cash. I could even respect that a little.

@nazokiyoubinbou @robotistry @waitworry
Hey... architecture profs. ask your students to design a new white house.
We SHOULD imagine what this house of the head of state would look like if this were a country that put the majority of people who live here first.
Even if it's never built.
