It's really gone too far and it's not cute anymore. Especially without any graffiti to distract you from the grime. You see this is why I take the bus mostly... but yeah... it's faster.
@futurebird not to brag but look at the TW3000 in Hannover.

These days, Charon wears a cap and hi-vis vest, demanding subway tickets instead of drachmas.
Good thing I always have a spare one-way ticket in my wallet, I guess…

You shut your mouth.

@futurebird i always wondered if these were funeral trains transporting rail workers to their final resting place; i don't know if that idea is charming or just grim
@phooky @futurebird That was a thing that happened. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Necropolis_Railway

@futurebird They have secret new yorkers on them who are invisible to you as well.
But when you board a train that passes through the secret versions of new york, you are invisible to those residents living there.
A multiverse of new yorks whose only connection to each other is the shared subway system
So, hold up. I could ride a train to NYC.2 and there would be a city there but no people, yet, still ... there would be "people" so things would just move around and change as if the city was alive, but never when I was looking at them?
That sounds kind of awesome for a vacation!
And creepy. Gonna add a #backrooms tag because at this point I think I might as well.

@futurebird Only if you can figure out how to get off the train at one of those stations

@MLE_online @futurebird Gotta figure out how to get ON one first

@phooky @futurebird That was a thing that happened. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Necropolis_Railway
@RogerBW @phooky @futurebird Funeral trains were a thing in Sydney in the late 19th and early 20th centuries too. The very gothic Mortuary Station, a.k.a. Necropolis Receiving Station, is still there: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regent_Street_railway_station

@spacelizard @RogerBW @futurebird talk about burying the lead: "From 1986 to 1989, a pancake restaurant, the Magic Mortuary, was operated using railway carriages to house the diners."

@phooky @futurebird burial at sea but they just throw you out while going over the manhattan bridge

@cinebox @futurebird i absolutely know people who would do this if it were an actual option

There is something about an empty train “not in service” passing at “minimum station speed” that is elegant, and grim. I am convinced these are the trains that go to the other secret versions of NYC.
@futurebird There are other secret versions of NYC? You mean besides the mental map I, as a non-driver, have that so baffles my car-owning friends? I can believe it.
I've long held the belief that there is a magical Irish pub somewhere in NYC where, if you sneak out a back door, you are transported to a similarly magical (but inverse) pub in Dublin. I haven't found it yet, but there are still a few Irish pubs I haven't visited.
-
@futurebird I've experienced the opposite too, where I'm on the train passing through a lit but not yet opened station
@RandomStickman @futurebird There was a station on the R line that was badly damaged by the September 11 attack. It was closed for a few years, barely lit, and quite terrifying to ride through, especially the first time when I wasn't expecting it. Absolutely eerie!

@futurebird i used to love the construction trains and the occasional money train going by in the early hours of the morning.
