If this is a big enough initiative it will have a huge impact on quality of life for new yorkers. I don't know if it is big enough. Nonetheless *this* is the way to address the things that make people feel like the city is a dump. It's also just... civilized. IDK. How do you call it a city and you have no bathrooms?

    Anyway welcome to communism.

it's massive and keys into active travel as well.

i've tooted in the past about how my city keeps chatting about active travel. on my 5 mile pedestrian corridor into town there is one (1) toilet. and it usually isn't open. how is that meant to work?

No one wants to walk past or smell the works of those who can do without a facility either. Regardless.

@futurebird I recently stayed in a decent hotel. The people working at reception (open about 12 hours a day) had to go to a cafe across the street every. single. day.
Seriously the working conditions have eroded badly these past years and politicians still frame everyone of being work shy.

@futurebird I like Zohran because he goes to solve obvious problems instead of coming up with complex justifications why he can’t.

I remember when I lived in NYC they were removing trash bins from subway platforms to “encourage NYers to carry their trash home with them.” This led to a predictable increase in trash fires delaying subway trains.

@futurebird When describing NYC I always praise the food, culture, parks, interesting architecture, and the transit system but I always end with “but the smell, especially in summer.” I’m guessing residents get used to it, but it’s really powerful

@futurebird This is a huge leap forward for public health in NYC. A coup for human rights for the poor. And also pretty good for me, personally. The cycle of “I need to pee so I will buy a caffeinated or alcoholic beverage” is such a pain.

@futurebird Big Coffee is not going to like this.

(I haven't been to the US since the 90s but when I was in NYC it was a minor source of amusement/irritation to me that the only easy place to go to the loo was a cafe but ofc you had to buy something to use it... like a coffee. Which meant that you needed to go to the loo again quite soon after... at another cafe.)

Zohran is expanding the number of public toilets in NYC and improving how the existing ones are cleaned and maintained.

Communism is when you can find a place to pee without buying something.

@sidereal @futurebird More like "take your trash home so we can cut the workers who empty the bins and don't have to pay for the trash to be taken away."
