@futurebird It's very weird for me to retoot this – for years I lived under what was the communism/socialism in Poland. This was pure authoritarianism and had very little to do with the ideas of freedom and equality, and I was definitely anti-communist. Over the last decades I learned more about the biology of humans. We're social animals. Socialism is the way to go.

@futurebird This is a huge leap forward for public health in NYC. A coup for human rights for the poor. And also pretty good for me, personally. The cycle of “I need to pee so I will buy a caffeinated or alcoholic beverage” is such a pain.

Seriously the working conditions have eroded badly these past years and politicians still frame everyone of being work shy.@LappenjammerDieZweite

@futurebird Big Coffee is not going to like this.
(I haven't been to the US since the 90s but when I was in NYC it was a minor source of amusement/irritation to me that the only easy place to go to the loo was a cafe but ofc you had to buy something to use it... like a coffee. Which meant that you needed to go to the loo again quite soon after... at another cafe.)

I remember when I lived in NYC they were removing trash bins from subway platforms to “encourage NYers to carry their trash home with them.” This led to a predictable increase in trash fires delaying subway trains.

@futurebird I cannot stress enough how public toilets are necessary for the non cis male public. Whenever I travel, or even when I just leave home for a few hours it is an issue. Especially for those who can't afford cafés and such. Shops used to have toilets over here whenever they had a seated area. Now you're lucky to find one and not pay a Euro for it.
@LappenjammerDieZweite @futurebird This especially applies to disabled and chronically ill people (in that case even including cis men). There are some diseases/disabilities where someone might just have to go to the toilet IMMEDIATELY. -

Doing things in NYC means go big or go home. For this to have an impact it will need to have a secure funding source and it should take about a year or two to spin up.
