@LoseFriendsandAlienatePeople Maybe NYC and other big cities just aren’t for you.

Huge cities seem like shit holes.
Generally, I don't like extremes. Cities can be too large, but can also be too small.

If this is a big enough initiative it will have a huge impact on quality of life for new yorkers. I don't know if it is big enough. Nonetheless *this* is the way to address the things that make people feel like the city is a dump. It's also just... civilized. IDK. How do you call it a city and you have no bathrooms?

      Anyway welcome to communism.

@futurebird Public bathroom infrastructure is a huge, positive thing. As a Torontonian, I am extremely jealous of how seriously Mamdani is taking these very basic issues.

        @futurebird

There are a couple of playgrounds here which do have bathrooms but whether or not they are open is pretty hit and miss.

A friend had to take their daughter to the nearest bar to use the bathroom to make sure she didn't have an accident in early potty training days.

Luckily it's the kind of neighborhood place which is very ok with that but having to leave the playground to go to a bar for that is not a sign of a healthy city.

This is why I dread traveling through red states. Almost zero public services or recreation.

@futurebird "but drug users and homeless people!"

yes because obviously the way to reduce drug abuse and homelessness is to make people piss and shit on the sidewalk

My town used to have public restrooms at a bunch of parks, but it shut them all down over the years. And people now complain there’s nowhere to go unless you go to a store or go home.

Seems like a great public service.

A lot of people don't understand how limiting toilet access is to many people, including the pregnant and elderly among others.

@futurebird This is an issue that gets little consideration or political glamour, but is actually a really big deal for the livability of a city. It's up there with public transport and libraries, in my opinion. NYC has so many residents and people commuting for work, and it's such an important travel destination for tourists that it should be a priority.

Too many times, politicians (particularly conservative and "economic rationalist" types) want to cut costs, or invoke the ick-factor against a group they hate (I've lived in places where closing public toilets was cited in the war against drugs or to keep kids safe from LGBTQIA+ people), or do outrageous hostile social-engineering against homeless people, and so they proudly choose to under-fund or close public toilets. It's a short-sighted move because it degrades public amenity and sanitation, and has flow-on effects for restaurants, bars, and other local businesses.

On the other hand, good accessibility and around-the-clock availability of public toilets makes life safer, easier to plan for, and more comfortable for minorities, women, parents with babies looking for a change room, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. And, yes, homeless people, because they're a fact of life that cannot be solved by hoping they'll simply disappear if you're cruel enough to them. I'm seeing this announcement by Zohran Mamdani as a sign that he treats people and their basic needs with respect.

@futurebird I cannot stress enough how public toilets are necessary for the non cis male public. Whenever I travel, or even when I just leave home for a few hours it is an issue. Especially for those who can't afford cafés and such. Shops used to have toilets over here whenever they had a seated area. Now you're lucky to find one and not pay a Euro for it.

@futurebird man Boston could learn from this. I can’t recommend anyone visit these days unless I’m able to show them around. City government has essentially allowed our public bathrooms be hidden from view, so visitors won’t know they exist

@LappenjammerDieZweite @futurebird Here it depends on where. In the woods it is fair game, but in a city someone could be accused of indecent exposure or similar.

Nonetheless *this* is the way to address the things that make people feel like the city is a dump. It's also just... civilized. IDK. How do you call it a city and you have no bathrooms?

                                      Anyway welcome to communism.

@futurebird@sauropods.win It'd be quite nice to have working toilets instead of needing to find a Starbucks (which is the only good use for a Starbucks, if you ask me).

Zohran is expanding the number of public toilets in NYC and improving how the existing ones are cleaned and maintained.

If this is a big enough initiative it will have a huge impact on quality of life for new yorkers. I don't know if it is big enough.
