When I was in middle schools this girl, Cricket was always talking about her "boyfriend from Canada"

@PizzaDemon @futurebird No, 70% are named Dave so the numbers wouldn't add up if 40% were Kyle.
-
@futurebird Once upon a time, I was someoneβs Canadian girlfriend
Also often thought to be imaginary
@bougiewonderland @futurebird Me, too! I was (more than once) someone's Canadian girlfriend and often assumed to be imaginary.
Canadian Girlfriends Unite!

@TheVoidTLMB @futurebird It's uncommon, but not unheard of as a name in the US. Crickets are viewed as cheerful creatures and sometimes considered good luck.
@Ashmire @TheVoidTLMB @futurebird
For the benefit of our American cousins: Cricket is a 'game' 'played' between two teams. A player on one team is armed with a club, and a player from the other team repeated throws a rock at him, basically trying to kill him. For some strange reason the chap with the club isn't allowed to hit the rock thrower with his club.It does seem weird that American parents might choose to name a daughter Cricket!

Kyle was like bigfoot. Whenever we were supposed to get to meet him something would happen.
I really doubted he existed at all.
But I know someone who went to the wedding and laid a hand on Kyle. He's real.

It's a lovely name for a girl. Like Myrmica or Coleoptera (Colie for short)

@smithkm @PizzaDemon @futurebird Canadians never have two first names?
-
@futurebird As a Brit, the thing Iβm most sceptical about is that someone might be called βCricketβ.

@TheVoidTLMB @futurebird That got me stumped too until I remembered that they're all a bit batty over there.

When I was in middle school this girl, Cricket was always talking about her "boyfriend from Canada"
"He's named Kyle and plays hockey. We met on the postcard exchange. He sent me this valentines day card."
We made fun of her. Kyle was obviously fake.
Well. She just married Kyle.
KYLE WAS REAL ALL ALONG.
Love wins.

did you just
@futurebird I did. That.
-
@futurebird I did. That.
@futurebird possibly even a full kylespiracy.

@futurebird I had a Canadian girlfriend once. We met at a Washington state park one hot summer day. She was definitely a girl, but we were actually just friends (and exchanged letter for several years).

Perhaps Kyle is an Alien in disguise.

@futurebird Kyle was always going on about Cricket. We thought he meant the game. Best wishes to both of them. No more test matches.

@futurebird
"Listen, before we get married, there's one thing you have to do for me.""Of course, name it."
"You need to legally change your name to Kyle and memorize this entire backstory."

@futurebird I went to grad school in Kentucky for reasons
where "girlfriend in Ohio" was the same fakeness as "girlfriend in Canada" is up here
i can also confirm my "girlfriend in Ohio" was real but wow did we not get married and DOUBLE-wow did I dodge a bullet

@futurebird I'm imagining single people in Canada suddenly deluged with propositions from people from the US who they haven't seen for years, or perhaps never even met in real life.

i was just about to marry my Canadian girlfriend today then Kyle showed up and professed his love to my girlfriend right in the middle of the ceremony
and i couldn't believe it, she turned and looked at me, i will never forget that look, then she abandoned me for Kyle
Cricket and I are halfway through a bottle of cheap liquor right now
