    Here we have an admission this will not be an "appreciating asset"

    It's bad enough for a car you have the payment, insurance, parking and tolls.

    An electric car has no gas to purchase, but now you also need to pay rent monthly for software.

    This is that "Rent Seeking" I've been told about isn't it?

      @futurebird

      Apparently, rent seeking has been creeping into car features for a few years now.

      Mercedes selling you a subscription to access your car's full acceleration has been one of the most blatant ones.

      The BMW head-up display is also a subscription feature. And selling a "Traffic Camera Information" service is so on brand for BMW.

          @billiglarper @futurebird Ehh, I can see a big aftermarket of post warrantee hacks coming. For a used car I say, challenge accepted!

              @futurebird Not really anything new. With Tesla you have to pay extra for greater range despite it is just flipping a digital switch and no mechanical difference. One high end car company charges a subscription for seat warmer. GM is eliminating CarPlay and Android Auto because they want subscription income. Even my Subaru will want money after 3 years for Internet connectivity but while it seems overprice also seems more reasonable in that this is a service.

                @futurebird To be clear, Tesla has been putting things behind subscriptions for years and years. Even simple stuff like heated seats apparently is part of the subscription models.

                Which really begs the question of if their cars could straight up just decide you don't have a thing you do in the middle of driving and cause things to shift in a way that could cause an accident anyway.

                (No one should use Tesla's self-driving regardless. It's a hacky mess and is not safe.)

                  @futurebird Yes, it sure looks like rent seeking to me, however we can purchase FSD (full self-driving) for the car for a one-time fee. For the car we bought (before their glorious leader showed his true colours, if anyone cares) it's the only software not included in the purchase price. Not saying they won't change the rules in the future, of course. For the record: in my experience, supervised FSD is safer than a lot of human drivers.

                    @braxa26

                    The article is about how they plan to phase that out.
