    This video about NYC accents is amazing.

    But a few observations:

    1. Tyriq has a gay black men's Brooklyn accent. Jones didn't mention the gay part, but it's a thing.
    2. People in the comments are calling Tyriq's accent "new" ugh NO. It's at least 30 years old.
    3. As a person from Ohio the kids DO have NYC accents. It's changing, but I hear it. Bronx/Brooklyn/Manhattan not the same.

    As a 20 year transplant when I go home I'm told *I* have one. This cannot be true.

      It's kind of fascinating that there is a gay men's accent like an overlay that some gay men do. They kind of dare you to say anything negative about it. But I think it's awesome.

      I wonder why there is no lesbian accent or bisexual accent... UNLESS.

      *sits up very straight*

        I think one of the benefits of "sounding gay" is it's off-putting to homophobic people so they don't waste your time.

          @futurebird When you first moved to New York did people comment on your Ohio accent? I was told I had a Wisconsin accent by people that I thought sounded exactly like me.

            @BLTpizza

            I didn't get many comments, but people knew I wasn't born in NYC without asking. Now and then people will ask, which surprises me.

            NYC natives can still tell I'm not from here but other people can't.

                @wx1g @gay_ornithischians

                The guys I know who have it claim it 'just happened' and they don't know how. (I believe this.) It's hard to develop any natural sounding accent on purpose. One of the great mysteries.

                The accent we have is the one we can't hear AT ALL.
