That's when it hit me.
MINECRAFT
They think it's a made up creature from minecraft!
(Totally gonna tell them that endermites and shulkers are real too next time this happens. heh heh heh heh)
@futurebird My daughter didn't believe me when I said nachos were named after a guy called Ignacio
because I'd told her that string cheese was invented by Dr. Emily String
fair enough really

@futurebird Just don't tell them Herobrine is real.
I'm not sure what would happen, but it can't be good.
Um. But Herobrine *is* real.

@futurebird That is ridiculous. Shulkers were hunted to extinction a long time ago, when sailors arrived on their island and realized their shells were perfect for storing goods for long voyages.

So tragic.

@mikemccaffrey @futurebird That's why, to this day, old sailors sometimes refer to container ships as "shulkshifters."

@futurebird I remember one of my Spore mutuals making a speculative insect based on the Minecraft silverfish. I'm not sure if they were aware of the real silverfish or not.
-
@futurebird shocked to discover this thing in a game is a reference to an actual thing outside the game
I wonder what they think about sheep and pigs.

@wonka @waitworry @futurebird You have no idea how long I thought white sheep with black heads were just abstractions for children's cartoons—I live in Australia and so basically every sheep I had ever seen was a Merino.

I know of an unnamed NY Time reporter who visited a farm for an article in the 00s and dutifully took photos of the various animals writing down what their names were. One photo showed a lamb. It was labeled "lamb, baby"
he may or may not have been unaware that this was a sheep.
(exactly WHAT did you think it was that Mary had???)
He figured it out by the time the article went out.

@futurebird @TashTaylor @wonka @waitworry someone once told me they always thought sparrows were baby pigeons. Because of seeing only small and big birds in town, they made this deduction as a child.

@WesternInfidels @mikemccaffrey
It was especially bad that they had to killed two shulkers to get enough shells for both the box AND the lid horribly unsustainable.
And it was dangerous too, they shot poison darts that made people feel like they were floating as they contained a hallucinogenic toxin.

@futurebird They’re going to lose lots of sleep when they find out skeletons are real, and they’re closer than you think.

@futurebird Does #minecraft have #firebrats too? Cause they absolutely sound like something made up for a game.

@futurebird I don't think I've seen silverfish in meatspace more than 3 times. And that includes an insect zoo sighting. Further, nearly all the photos of silverfish I've seen were in some way or another related to insect nerdery; they were tooted by an entomologist, they were on inaturalist, they were part of an article about evolution or entomology, etc.

And yet, they are probably in your house.

@futurebird Possibly. At the very least, the spiders are eating something. (I mean, I see them eat carpet beetles, but maybe there aren't enough of those.)
It's very dry here, though, so it's possible they just can't find a space with enough moisture. (I guess it's worth mentioning that some time ago, I needed to unbox and repackage all my books, and I didn't find any signs of arthropod damage on them. )
