I will give the Catholic Church credit for being one of the few ancient stultified enduring institutions of human power that doesn't slack on the outfits.

It disgusts me that US supreme court justices are too hip and modern to put on more elaborate robes or nice little wigs even as they revive the horrors of the past. Likewise parliaments are always trying to act like "we live in modern times" so they don't need to put on a costume.
I want amusing and impressive costumes. I want hats.

There should be an interesting hat and robe for EVERY major office. Something ridiculous and imposing. If you want to "rule" you need to dress up.
It's insulting to have them show up in ordinary clothing like they are doing something ordinary that no one should pay any attention to.
I want a president's hat, congressional capes and little slippers. Make it silly. Make it theatrical. Make it tedious.

@futurebird I always enjoyed graduation day as an academic, because we all got to dress up in fancy robes and hoods and hats.
Lots of comparison in the robing room: "That's a nice turquoise lining you've got." "Yes, but I have to wear the mortar board, not the Tudor cap."

@futurebird justices of the Supreme Court of Canada wear red robes trimmed with white fur. Santa suits. I don't know the detailed history. It's possible they had to hear cases in an unheated Ottawa shack for a few decades before the court building was completed.
