Was surprised to find a new-to-me jack jumper species, Myrmecia fulvipes, in a small park I’ve been visiting for 20 years.

Do you think they recognize you? It's gotta be like getting photographed by Steve McCurry or something.

This is a nice angle that shows her binocular* vision. She is a little hunter.

@futurebird @alexwild Do only some ant have binocular vision?
Not really? I think most of them can get both eyes on you at once, it's more that her eyes are bigger and better positioned to target things in-front of her rather than just providing a general sense of what's around her.

So maybe not the best word choice. But her eyes are specialized.

@futurebird @alexwild Do we know if they actually have depth perception?
Yes they have depth perception.
(found a better link where you can see a pdf of the paper which is very cool... not just the abstract)
However I was pretty confident this would be the case because of the way some ants can jump over gaps. How could you jump over a gap without knowing how wide it is?
