Why is Housing Works thrift shop asking me to “show photo ID..

Admittedly I'm a little prickly about the whole "show your ID thing" ... the other day I was buying a vape* from 7/11 in the same neighborhood. I've never bought one before and was not surprised to be asked for proof of age. I showed my passport. They refused to accept it. Computer system can't scan a passport. It only scans driver's licenses and "state IDs" (state IDs only exist in the US because of the janky way we rely on Driver's licenses.)
*tacky bad, blame my uncle
I was offended by the "driver-centric" computer system and ended up at a bodega that didn't ask for any ID at all.
I'm about two more experiences from being one of those "cash only" people at this point. LAMO

That's the vibe I got. But this is just a vibe. It was confusing. I've never had anyone ask me for a photo ID just to look around a shop.
And frankly I don't think people should have to even feel the need to always have an ID on them.
It's absurd to expect that. This is not the Pentagon campus. I'm shopping! Leave me alone!
(this is one of the reasons driving culture is insidious. It makes people forget that, no, you do not need to carry a photo ID with you to just... live.)
@futurebird @david_preston Were they stopping anyone else? Were they mostly/only asking non-white people for IDs?

I was not in there long enough to make any observation about that. I did feel singled out, but IDK.

@futurebird @david_preston this story can be a metaphor for "looking for Porn online in the UK"

Once, at a bar in a very small town in rural Kansas, I was asked for ID. I only had my passport. When I showed it to the bartender, she asked "do you have anything government-issued?"

My stupid island...I kind of wish I'd said "Why do you need my ID? I'm not trying to listen to spotify in the UK or anything!"
But I'm also glad I didn't say that because I doubt the dude would have known what it meant and I just wanted to leave.

What.

Why is Housing Works thrift shop asking me to “show photo ID.. to enter the store?” I was not aware they were part of the got damn british internet all of a sudden.
“you need a photo ID to buy anything”
“I can’t pay cash?”
*blank stare* “need to see photo ID”Meanwhile other people are just walking in and out. So, naturally I left. Will not be back. Are people just showing their IDs for any little thing now?
My kids school nurse called and said come get kid because of an asthma attack.
I showed up to the school office, and they wanted me to log in with an tablet and including take a photo of my id.
I refused, and said I worked in IT and complained no one can make secure systems these days. It's a never ending stream of data breaches.
They were put out some and said ok but you have to give us your birthday.
I accepted that.

As someone who works at a school we are terrified of a non-parent... often a relative taking a kid when they aren't the right person listed to do so.
But if they could verify it was you by birthday that'd probably be enough.
And if the kid is old enough they will tell you who that is. But that's what this is about.
The photo of the ID is a too much IMO.

@futurebird @david_preston oh man my friend's relatives was teaching driving lessons in remote Alaska, where it is not possible to drive anywhere. specifically so these folks can get a form of ID.
