We aren't even asking why ICE is even at these protests full of white ICU nurses and moms in vans. Like, why are they there? Looking for a Mexican drug gang in a suburban roundabout? Finding the secret foreign terror hiding in the trunk of a minivan?
They aren't even pretending to do "immigration enforcement" they're just suppressing dissent. Lower your head and put that sign down and they will go away. Say "yes officer" and "no officer" and show your papers and no one gets dead.*

@futurebird "Show your papers"?
That's something you only have to do in repressive police states, no?
In the UK there is no requirement to even *have* any "papers" that you could "show" (not everybody has a passport or driving licence).

@RussCheshire @futurebird Yes I know.
Last time around lots of people signed up to #No2ID. I don't remember there being a time limit to that commitment, so as far as I know I'm still bound by it.

@futurebird They don't even seem to respond well to people complying.
Its stunning but my sense is that they recognize that most "polite" folks won't watch video of their atrocities and so they think they will get away with anything even as it is all filmed because folks will read a headline or listen to a blurb.
The stunning part is just the fact that we live in an era with so much actual footage but folks look away the same as they do with homeless folks.

@futurebird
it seems like a safe bet that they don't actually care about "voter registration practices", so the question is: why do they want read access to the voter database?(also, it's not explicit in the letter, but it's unclear whether they are also asking for *write* access to the database.)

@futurebird (it looks like one explanation for the ICE presence is that it could be designed to put pressure on Minnesota officials to comply with Bondi's demands in this letter, but then that just kicks the can down to, "what are they trying to accomplish if these demands are satisfied?".)

@futurebird Pretti wasnβt murdered at a protest.
There were about half a dozen private citizens spread around the street watching and filming the activities of ICE.
The conflict was precipitated by an officer pushing a woman to the ground, Pretti attempting to help her up but then finding himself pepper sprayed and under a pile-on of 8 officers where he was finally executed by five bullets in the back.
No placards. No chants.The protests and the placards were the previous day.

@futurebird There must be some ICE who are not violent, racist thugs who are horrified watching their mates shoot unarmed people. They must have partners or friends who they've told about their concerns. WHERE ARE THEY?

They don't exist. There are just more of them waiting for their chance to "shoot a liberal" because their bosses said they could. Because they think there will be no consequences.
The problem is at some point one gets so angry that you don't have room to feel fear anymore. This is supposed to scare everyone into going home. But I do not think it will work at all.

@futurebird related: Marc Elias's blog, Democracy Docket, says the admin has been trying to get voter rolls from several states via the courts, but so far they've been unsuccessful:

@JamesWidman@mastodon.social @futurebird@sauropods.win No doubt a part of the overall puzzle but not unique to Minnesota as Bondi has been busy doing this to all the states. Marc Elias talks about it frequently.

@futurebird @peterbrown according to the news agents podcast (they did two episodes from there) there is a network keeping eyes on unfamiliar cars, logging licence plates, turn up with whistles as soon as ice is spotted anywhere. They're doing an amazing job. And clearly it is freaking ice out.
