Lastly when you have people who don't know much about ants selling queens they don't provide enough care information, queens can end up dying. There are local species you can keep. For free!
There are permits you can get from licensed sellers who know what they are selling so you can raise the ants and enjoy their life cycle and not just kill them in two weeks.
Don't buy ants smuggled in a suitcase from someone who can't tell Camponotus from Dynomyrmex

I do think there are some tropical species that could make good pets from what I've learned about them from keepers in their home countries. But, more research is needed about which ants would make sense.
(With ants the risk of invasives coming from pets is rather low, but the other impacts aren't good.)
